Innocence Lost: The Remnants of Human Trafficking
The toddler sized dress with its sweet silhouette so typical of little girl dresses, is made from discarded (yes, washed) lingerie and garter belts, staples of the sex trade. They are layered over multiple tutus used under such childhood dresses. Many will find these textiles uncomfortable, and so they should, as the topic itself is uncomfortable. The cut out hands spell out âHuman Trafficking, Help Usâ in American Sign Language to represent how many people keep this issue quiet and how the victims themselves often do not speak out either. On the backside of each hand is a statistic about human trafficking. Each fact was copied onto it a student from my Communications 101 class at Kent State Stark (I was a student too, back in the classroom for recertification hours). My purpose was for 22 more young people to become aware of the issue and (yes, pun intended) have a hand in spreading the information. Rather than just listening, they had to be part of the process. Hopefully viewers will take a hand in their own, read the information and be made aware of a fact that needs a voice.
