Afghan Rescue
The original title was “Afghans on a Stand” as in Afghanistan, but times change and so do people’s perceptions so now it is just a garment made from salvaged afghans. I chose ones that were as ugly as possible but also quite colorful and partially damaged. In good conscious, cutting up someone else’s perfectly useful handiwork is just not something I could do. This piece is the first of several to come using afghans and was started at my gallery space in 2016 before we closed. The original design was for a ball gown but the weight got to be prohibitive. Redesigned as a party dress, this 4 piece garment is quite fun to wear. It consists of a full skirt with several petticoats to support it, a halter styled top with statically placed potholders, a belt and a shrug cape. I even added pockets! Not shown is the matching purse and a fascinator hat.
