Skirt of Surprises

“Made from reclaimed zippers, this barrel shaped skirt suspends from vintage neckties that function like suspenders. The zippers all work to reveal bright fabrics, embellished trims and secret treats. Maybe you will be lucky?”
Above is the commentary read while this garment walked the runway. For a while, I was obsessed with zippers and what could be done with them. This garment was made specifically to show of bits and pieces of interesting remnant fabrics by having them hidden behind zippers, therefore making it a participation piece. On the runway, the model opens zippers and hands out candy or other surprises to the audience. Because of weight, it is built on a chicken wire frame shaped much like a barrel and then suspended off the body at the shoulders. Criss-crossing the support ties was necessary to distribute the weight and minimize the swinging of the barrel. I do not know exactly how many zippers and hidden pockets are used. Some zippers are inside others for a double reveal and others are stitched closed. The barrel itself does open up the back for easy access for putting this all together when showing in person. A basic garment of choice is worn underneath. Shown here is a brown slip. There is a coordinating caplet of dark fabrics meant to be a “good and evil” revelation concept, but I chose to focus on the happy only.
