"And so we came...."

A reversible wearable coat that embodies the topic of Immigration. One side is made from burlap as the base textile, one often associated with poorer cultures. Hand painted faces of various skin tones representing the peoples of the world are appliqued onto the burlap. Overlaying them is a grid that could be a net, a chain link fence or ropes, depending upon your perspective. Cascading from the shoulders (weighing on their shoulders) are items representing reasons why people came to America which are also written on the scrap fabrics as well. The reverse side is a stylized Statue of Liberty whose right cuff is the torch. The keys are symbolic of our opportunities. On the back is our flag reinterpreted in the skin tone fabrics with the words of the Lazarus poem written in the star field. The buttons are compasses because people come from all over the world
