1920s Decor Inspired Dress
“The era of Erte and the silhouettes of Art Deco inspired this draped gown made from…well, drapes. With styles that focused on the hips, what better way to continue our interior décor theme than by borrowing a lampshade, to be the life (or is it the light?) of any party”
Above is the commentary read while this garment walked the runway. My scene assignment was to capture the 1920s. That era highlighted the hips while maintaining a slim silhouette as women freed themselves of restrictive clothing. In the studio was this lampshade and lots of unused curtains and yardage. Knowing most people would think flapper, I decided to go with decorator. Perhaps I was thinking of Scarlet O’Hara and her drapery dress or Carol Burnett as Scarlet in her curtain rod creation, descending her staircase with unapologetic abandon. So here we have an ensemble that drapes down the front, drapes down the back and floats along in the breeze while still using the signature flapper dress element, fringe.
