COVID Coat #2 and the Hydration Dress
The second of my COVID coats is seen here. It is made of sheer and light weight remnants rescued from the discard bin of a Chicago textile warehouse. The challenge of the garment was to use every inch of available fabric since additional supplies were unattainable during COVID lockdowns. The cuffs of the coat are the original sleeves of my Mom’s gown for my brother’s wedding in 1987. My inspiration for the repurposed dress came from COVID as well. During the early weeks of the lockdown, like many people, we hoarded bottled water. The star pattern found on the bottom of the Aquafina brand bottles intrigued me, I kept cutting them off. Eventually the accumulated quantity got out of hand and needed to become something besides a garbage bag full of bottle bottoms. The bottoms needed to be on a bottom and the coat needed a companion to offset its transparency so the stars became a skirt. Over 300 bottle bottoms were used here and they sounds like falling rain when walking on the runway.
