House Coat ala Drotleff
The coat was originally a companion piece to “A woman’s place was in the home” dress, recently seen here at the Massillon Museum. The embroidery, tatting and crochet was all done by Anna Drotleff (1894-1978), my husband’s grandmother. There are two of each design because the embellishments are the matching ends of dresser scarves, table runners and dishtowels. I cut out the empty and stained parts in-between. The collar is comprised of layered doilies. My goal was to show as much of her handiwork as possible by giving it new life out of storage. I tried to iron out the creases but 50+ years of storage took their toll on the textiles. Fortunately the thread colors are as vibrant as ever.
