Spy vs Spy
“The time when art became fashion and fashion became art. It was mad, it was mod, it was meant to be…overexposed and underestimated. Style became the ultimate celebrity. However, all was not what it seemed during the Cold War.”
Above is the commentary read while this garment walked the runway. My scene assignment was to capture the 1960s. I grew up with Mad Magazine and the Spy vs Spy cartoon, cold war themed Twilight Zone episodes and James Bond movies. This piece started with a discarded cream vinyl raincoat, stained and torn. I then brought in elements of Mondrian and pop art, deconstructed the coat and added clear spots (for spying on her legs). The metallic faces and circles are the cloth coverings of beach balls purchased for a community event decoration job, now covering the worn and torn spots. The faces are modern emoji which I found very funny as reaction images to Russian interference. The hat on the model is authentic vintage Soviet Union headwear and the collar is fur. As the piece ages and deteriorates, I add spots to hide those bad spots, much like spies cover their tracks so you can’ see!
