Resort to Comfort
The theme of the fashion show scene for which this dress was created is “resort travel”. It is a very comfortable tank dress made from afghan scraps leftover from my first Hoard Couture afghan creation back in 2016. The belt was rescued from a trash bin at a textile warehouse. The coat was originally a companion piece to “A woman’s place was in the home” dress, recently seen here at the Massillon Museum, however it pairs better with this garment to highlight the handiwork. The embroidery, tatting and crochet was all done by Anna Drotleff (1894-1978), my husband’s grandmother. There are two of each design because the embellishments are the matching ends of dresser scarves, table runners and dishtowels. I cut out the empty and stained parts in-between. The collar is comprised of layered doilies. This vintage 1950s swing coat pattern coordinated so well with my resort dress that they are now partners. I tried to iron out the creases but 50+ years of storage took their toll on the textiles. Fortunately the thread colors are as vibrant as ever.
