The Butterfly's Garden
Discarded remnants of costume fabrics became the source of inspiration for this coat. Each piece was no larger than 44” by 8” but contained delightful patterns and designs that I wished to highlight. The base coat is made from black out curtains chosen for their weight and ability to support the heavier panels without sagging. The butterfly applique has been in my inventory of many years and inspired the title of this garment. The coat has pockets, a full Velcro front closer and a hood. My problem solving goal with this piece was to find a layout for the panels which made visual sense rather than appearing to be randomly attached. The panels were made first, with black binding to separate and accentuate the sequined patterns. Originally imaged as a series of flowers, the panels proved too big and too few. The hood interfered with several layouts so I started at that point and worked down, rather than up. Sequins are a messy material and will most likely live under my furniture forever!
