Dress #25 "I envisioned this differently, therefore I am not a fan."
* One king sized dust ruffle
* Toddler T shirt tie dyed for 2005 scout camp theme that was worn by a pink flamingo outside my tent
* thread, 5 phone wires, 7 safety pins, 8 quilting pins
* 1 90’s era cat pin
* 3 1970’s vintage glasses cases (mine) used to hold the fan collection, quiver style
* 51 fan sleeves from the JHS black light halftime show 200__. Fans were used as props then thrown away except for the 5 used on this dress
* 43 pairs of eyeglasses from the 1960’s to present day including sunglasses, reading glasses, my childhood prescription glasses, my son’s prescription glasses, and novelty glasses.
* Fan collection: one ostrich feather from the 30’s or 40’s, two from the 1950’s, one from the 1960’s, one marabou from the 1970’s and one metals class project called “the fan brush”, early 2000’s
Nametag is my 1983/84 Smithsonian membership card with my maiden name.
Originally intended to feature only eyeglasses, I had to figure out how to hold them safely. The fan sleeves were a natural derivative of a glasses case so I sewed them like petals onto the dust ruffle. Weight is an issue as usual so the bulk of the fabric and three of the band fans, wired to stay open, support the skirt. As I accumulate discarded sunglasses each season, this dress will be a work in progress. The vintage fans have sat in drawers tucked away for years unseen so it was time to enjoy them! Why I kept my old eyeglasses and cases from elementary school and junior high….I will never know. I got my first contacts at age 15 and never looked back….so to speak.
