Surrounded by protest, we are still one nation, under God
2020 // Revised 2026
This cape was conceived during the early days of violent protests in our cities and in reaction to the vandalism of our cultural heritage that occurred during the summer of 2021. The civil unrest of 2025/26, this time against people inspired me to deconstruct and rework this piece. The white canvas is covered in layers of spray paint with words and images embedded within. The linear work at first only used stylized iconic American objects and architecture. The updated linear work now includes activities that draw people together such as sports, food and music, plus unique American inventions. (each element is listed below). Also new is the use of a second layer of semitransparent color to highlight different areas. The collar is tie-dye fabric with faux fur; the fur trade having been an early step in our nation’s expansion.
