When a community comes together
A Snarky Art Studio “community participation project” for a 2016 First Friday, was to create a quilt square using the provide materials. I put out cut bedsheet squares, ink pads and stamps, and markers. Rather than a quilt, I made them into one of Hoard Couture’s early pieces and then packed it away, having used only 2/3 of the squares. In the process of resourcing a new garment, I came upon these forgotten pieces and made them into a coordinating jacket so all who participated would be represented. A few weeks later I found even more forgotten squares so hence the addition of a tote bag.
This two-piece design is an example of what can be created when a community comes together. The participants did not know what was to become of their work, nor did I really know what the eventual outcome would be at the time that I hosted the project. This piece represents how we can all contribute a part of ourselves towards a greater whole with the trust that our voice is handled respectfully.
