Time Passes, That Is The Long And Short Of It
Time Passes, That Is The Long And Short Of It
24 X 30
2008 / #4
This piece is not deep. It is also the first one of 2008 and I wanted to try putting the actual title into the painting since some viewers don’t read the titles of my work and end missing the whole point of what I am trying to say. So, the title and the concept are the same and I needed to make it as visually “opposite” as possible to show the passage of time. This piece is filed under “Gals on the Go” because they appear to be at a bus stop and also, because time moves on whether we like it or not.
The younger woman is obviously taller, thinner, and more beautiful, but also looks a bit skeptical at the message posted near by. Does she believe it or is she afraid of it? Her skirt and top are shorter, the legs and heels are longer, and all other elements are opposite those of the woman beside her. The elder woman shows wisdom of years and a smugness that comes with knowledge. Her shirt and skirt are also white and blue, but more appropriate to her age. The heels are low and practical, the hair short and the jewelry simple. The dogs are done on purpose as well. Those who have heard me speak in person know how I feel about celebrities with little dogs. The young woman’s dog is feisty and antagonistic. The older dog is calm and waiting….and salivating.
Some secondary elements add to my concept. The trash can for instance, is it there to contribute to the street scene, or does it tell you a bit about the older woman’s opinion of the younger? The store window and the sale going on is to reference that most of what we see in fashion is an illusion being sold to us as well as perhaps telling you what she may be doing on that street corner. Many young women today have no problem with selling their image and their dignity for some fleeting fame before they get to “old” (not my word, I quoted it off a TV show marketed to teens). And finally, the package on the newspaper, yes it is a doggie bag of sorts. Maybe the thought unspoken in the elderly woman’s head is that the young miss and the package both have something in common.
