Splitting Hairs
Splitting Hairs

2005 / #2
A while back when I had a major disagreement with someone on the job, he accused me of splitting hairs. Now I am pretty keen on hair so I had to think about that. A few weeks later, one of the hair stylist places in town had a major and public splitting of the staff and the clientele. Bad blood was flying. As with many of my paintings, the concept fell naturally into my lap. The idea of dueling hairdressers was born.
The ladies who sit in the chairs are not too sure about their choice of stylists. Both are getting haircuts also worn by the person wielding the scissors. An out of date character and an over the top trendy character are arguing, or dueling actually, about something or other. We don’t know. They are splitting hairs in the disagreement department, the style department, and the fashion department. Even the artwork on the wall behind them is of two different bunny images (hares! Get it?)
The wallpaper is comprised of layered triangles because they represent conflict and sharpness. I use another pun in that the two characters are standing toe to toe as well, or going toe to toe if you will. The poodle dog even has a do like her owner, or is it the other way around?
