Smooth Sailing
Smooth Sailing
30 X 36
2002 / #16
Not a very deep conceptual painting, Smooth Sailing is merely about a woman who has it made. She has money, jewelry (perhaps another gift from the person on the phone), a high rise apartment, and appears to be pretty carefree. Like many of my earlier women, she is a smoker, a mannerism I put in to occupy the hands and add a layer of depth with the smoke. This time I used a cat that has been pampered as well. The character is wearing a bonnet of some kind to protect her hair. The sailboats contain some gifts, hence the smooth sailing analogy. The wine glass has a lipstick print on the rim which is something I do quite often to carry color wherever I can.
