The Plein-Heiress
The Plein-Heiress
30 x 40
2003 / #21
This painting title is lost on people who do not know the term âplein aireâ painter. A plein aire artist is one who paints outside and does the actual piece right at the scene. The works are not studies or sketches; they are finished works capturing atmospheric conditions and natural lighting issues. My character is an heiress and she is painting outside. Thereforeâ¦she is a plein-heiress. Now the motivating issue behind this image is one I have with celebrities and the like who suddenly decide to become artists or declare themselves as such. Most of the time they have no formal training or any experience in the visual arts, but their right to self expression supersedes the lack of knowing what they are doing. Because of their high profile name, the works are given wide circulation and publicity and sell for mega dollars on the star market, as it is known. Sour grapes? You betcha! I paint to express myself too though and right now, my message is that this easy road to success ticks me off.
My character makes fun of the socialite celebrity who is famous for being famous. She knows her camera angle and the right poses. Her servants are there to help out and absorb the mess, headless because nobody really cares who they are. The M on her seat cover stands for money and her water must be in crystal, not a plastic tub like us little people. Even her pet is pampered and fussy. It seems like most starsâ pets are rather frou-frou any way. How often do you see a mangy old cat just sprawled across the sofa in a celebrity fashion spread? I have a castle like building and a teacup because I associate those images with British royalty and the word âheirsâ I associate with the British. The image she is painting is of no importance; it is the act of painting that she wants you to see. Cute little painting outfit included. After all, all artists wear berets, donât we?
