Ambassadors Of The Absurd At Their Embassy
Ambassadors Of The Absurd At Their Embassy
30 X 40
2007 / #5
I conceived this piece after watching some reality shows about the modeling industry. The young girls out there now just look absurd. Before hair and makeup, they look like typical junior high or high school kids, but after a couple of hours in the hands of some experts, they look unreal and almost alien. The super skinny look is also ugly and often exaggerated for the camera.
So where is the embassy? It exists back stage at fashion shows and fashion shoots, an area off limits to the general public but where we turn to get advice on what to do (wear, buy, flaunt etcâ¦.).
My characters display the behaviors often seen by creatures of this habitat; the champagne and the cell phones, the sneers and the aloofness of fellow clothes hangers, the little dogs and the high heels. I left off the underwear as a reference to the recent rash of starlets caught by paparazzi, sans their panties. Also, the wearing of under things is a no-no in fashion shows for fear of messing up the line of the garment being displayed. I added lots of jewelry as usual, and a couple of characters to represent the world of âreal peopleâ working real jobs. Notice the ankle bracelet on one of the womenâ¦seems these creatures canât seem to stay out of trouble or out of jail. Why is the mirror not more defined?....because the whole industry is an illusion anyway. I spent over 5 years of my youth in this world of smoke and mirrors so this one is personal.
