The Event Was A Blowout
40 X 30
2008 / #2
I am trying something new with this piece. Since getting viewers to read my titles is a continuous struggle, I have decided to put the title right in the painting as part of the concept. The title came from a magazine. This piece just makes fun of the different personalities in a salon on any given day. Three male hairdressers are used this time since I did all women in my last salon piece, “Splitting Hairs”. No particular reason for who they are other than to get three different hair issues on the men, overblown, bald and Geri-curl. Three women are the clients because I needed some hair issues. Character one has that tin foil thing going on which I never understood. She also has a problem with gum; it keeps getting blown out into her hair. The second character is a bit distressed and maybe ready to blow (up). The final character is getting overblown, just like her persona.
Looking deeper now, in the background is a hurricane symbol (big wind blow) and a tornado (big swirling blow). The cigarette is there so he can blow smoke. The hairspray is an aerosol with a specific label and of course the stylists have blow-dryers in their hands. Why the coffee cup?, because we blow on hot coffee. Why the daisy?, because in my youth there was a commercial where a child pulled petals from a daisy before an atom bomb blew up. What do the tattoos mean?, in Japanese they should stand for big wind. Why the dog, just because I liked the expression on his face. For some reason, most of my pieces have animals in them.
