Reality TV
40 x 30
2004 / #3
My older son likes to watch reality TV shows and so we watch them together and comment on the absurdity of most situations. The term is technically an oxymoron as TV is not real no matter how many ways one tries to spin it. At some point, production processes come into play and that makes it no longer real.
This piece takes a look at reality without the cameras. The character is watching TV (she appears later in Commando Cleaning 2005) while her life unfolds around her. I will leave it to the viewer to find all the issues related to life in a small apartment with young children. One thing I like to point out to kids is the sock on the milk carton. Don’t we all have that one missing sock? If we can advertise for missing children, why not all the missing socks in the world? They have to be someplace! Some where there is a truck stop with a million miss matched socks hanging on a bulletin board just waiting to find a mate…or would that be online dating for the darned things. If you are too young to know what darning a sock means…keep moving, I am sure you will find some painting to relate to.
In “reality”, we are all a bit lazier then we would like to admit. Who does not pick up the house only if someone is coming over? Otherwise, we are just as content to audition for an upcoming episode of Hoarders. (In 2004, Hoarders was not a reality show on TV as of yet, so I added this last part to the existing statement because my ongoing series seems to be ahead of its time….at times).
